Join us and see the Lofoten Fishery at close quarters!
In winter, the Norwegian Arctic cod begin their long migration from the Barents Sea to the coast of Northern Norway. By February/March they have arrived in Lofoten to spawn, providing the basis of our most famous seasonal fishery: the legendary Lofoten Winter Fishery.
Hundreds of boats take part in the Lofoten Fishery.
And even though today’s fleet consists largely of modern vessels, the fishermen still employ almost the same traditional fishing gear they have used for generations.
The coastal waters are divided up into areas that are reserved for the different types of gear: hand-lines, longlines, nets and Danish seines.

We organise trips out to the most important fishing grounds.
The early riser can take part in the action as a fleet several hundred strong sets off in unison from Henningsvær at dawn.
The fishing grounds are packed with boats. There is a hive of activity on all sides – gear is being hauled in or set, the fishermen are calling to each other between boats, and the VHF’s are crackling away.
This is the Lofoten Fishery at close quarters - as close as you can get without becoming a Lofoten fisherman yourself!
